We are recruiting for a Senior/Managing Associate to join our Future Energy, Planning & Environment team in Manchester, as a planning and compulsory purchase specialist. This role is offered on a fully flexible working basis to accommodate part or full-time hours.


Your Role

As a key addition to our growing team, you can expect to be involved with:

  • Varied planning work spanning Section 106 and highways agreements; due diligence support for corporate, real estate, future energy, and housing and regeneration colleagues; judicial review, appeals, inquiries and hearings; use class queries; and general planning advice
  • Working for both private and public sector clients, particularly promoting authorities for compulsory purchase orders, development consent orders and other statutory orders to deliver infrastructure, regeneration and other schemes
  • Advising on and managing CPO compensation cases through the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber), including strategy advice and advice on the legal principles of the Compensation Code, and advising on statutory blight (including Tribunal matters)
  • Advising on appropriation and section 203 matters, including advice to Members in Cabinet
  • Working with all members of the team, supporting colleagues with workloads in other office locations as required
  • Collaborating closely with our Partners in Manchester and our other office locations
  • Supporting in the supervision and management of juniors within the team
  • Taking an active involvement in business development, nurturing existing client relationships as well as new relationships
  • Supporting in exciting expansion plans for the compulsory purchase practice
  • Participating in the team’s Planning Know-How sessions, which are delivered on a rota basis

 

Your Skills & Experience

We are looking for:

  • A Qualified Solicitor (SRA or Law Society Registered) with 7+ year's PQE in a similar legal setting
  • Specific experience in the promotion of Compulsory Purchase Orders for acquiring authorities and CPO compensation, including strategic advice, project management skills and legal expertise in these areas
  • Experience of working with and advising public sector clients, particularly local authorities, and an understanding of local authority governance would be desirable
  • A forward thinker, with excellent analytical, communication and organisational skills, you will be self-motivated with the ability to manage workloads and deadlines
  • Commercially aware with some exposure to business development, with the ability to maintain and nurture strong client relationships
  • Contribution to our collaborative culture, with an ambition to assist in the development of junior team members
