Job Introduction

We have an urgent requirement for a Contract Lawyer with specialist knowledge in consumer credit and general consumer law to support one of our large banking clients. It will afford the opportunity to the successful candidate to further enhance their expertise in a broad range of consumer credit and commercial work.

This role will be on a initial 6 month contract but is likely to extend. Hybrid role that would potentially include some attendance in Central London.

You’ll provide insightful, commercial advice, and legal expertise to business and support partners, and facilitate the delivery of excellent outcomes for customers.

Ideally, you will have technical knowledge of consumer credit law, general consumer law as well as applying FCA Principles, FCA rules (e.g. CONC), Payment Services Regulations, and other requirements applying to the products we support (unsecured credit, hire and hire purchase).

In addition, going forward implementing the higher standard of customer treatment under Consumer Duty will be a key requirement.

On the Transport side, having experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts with a good knowledge of commercial law would also be valuable.

We'll be looking for you to focus on growing your own capabilities and investing in personal development by identifying and using the many opportunities within the team.

Main Duties:

As a Contract Lawyer you’ll be encouraged to provide advice on all aspects of customer journeys, from the on-boarding of customers through to servicing, collections and recoveries processes, contractual documentation, letters, rectifications, and new regulations in a way that makes a real difference to a customer’s experience. This includes the ability to support and provide legal advice on the following:

  • customers in financial difficulty/insolvency.
  • customer complaints.
  • rectifications & remediations.
  • persistent debt.
  • consumer duty.
  • digital journeys.
  • customer terms & conditions reviews.
  • new product offerings.
  • legal developments (statutory or otherwise).
  • Ensure risks are addressed and appropriately raised, reported, escalated and shared training needs of the businesses we support.

For this role your focus will be on issues affecting the unsecured personal loans and credit card businesses. Working collectively with lawyers across the Legal Community to provide joined up legal support in the areas of litigation, contentious regulatory, competition, data protection and commercial contracts issues to Consumer Finance.

About You:

  • At least, a qualified solicitor with a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience (or have equivalent legal qualification or experience).
  • Responsibility for the provision of high quality legal and commercial advice and support to relevant partners on a wide range of their needs.
  • Sound legal, commercial and risk judgement and understand and build an effective Legal risk management framework.
  • Build effective working partnerships and consensus, applying positive relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • Required to work effectively with management and executives across a variety of functions, not only to ensure compliance with legal requirements but also to proactively challenge, advise and influence management on legal issues.
  • Thrive on challenge and be able to balance multiple competing demands through uncertainty or ambiguity.
